D-EQXG Do 27

History

Dornier Do27

The QUAX Do 27, s/n 429, was commissioned with 3. Luftrettungs- und Verbindungsstaffel on November 12th, 1959 at Fassberg carring the registration LC+155. After being redeployed to Ahlhorn in 1964 it was recommisioned to the LTG 62 based there but it was mainly used by the BWSpFlgGr, the military flying club.

Do27

During these days the aircraft was equipped with a towing clutch and flew as GB+901 and 57+03 bevor she became civilian in 1980 to carry the registration D-EMEI. Being operated out of Alhorn in Northern Germany for towing and travelling she was aquired by the IGM-Do27 in Wunsdorf in 2005. She was dissamble awaiting her restoration but ended up being stored for many years until the QUAX Club woke her up again in 2013, bought her and ferried the parts to Paderborn.

When we bought the plane all she really needed was to be put together ans fly her again. After she finally arrived at PAD in parts we pit her in storage as it become ever so clear, that only a full restoration was the way to go in order to achieve our self proclaimed standard. It took some time to find the right direction and the way to go. We realized quite early that we wanted to go for one of the original paint schemes, yet, which one? Camouflage and bright orange as so many other Do27s? Rather not, we were looking for something more special, something really unique. We finally decided on the paint scheme that was used for the initial delivery of the Do to the Bundeswehr in 1959. The Bundeswehr was the first big order for the Do 27 and without that the Do 27 would have never become the first german plane that was designed and manufactured in Germany after WW II. So the QUAX Do 27 is truely unique as it is the one and only in the world that carries the original livery to the detail.

Restoration

After taking ownership at Wunsdorf we were able to start right away as most of the technical status of the plane had been evaluated already. So the stripping of multilayer paints, some ares showed 7 layers, could begin.

What a feeling, the Do completely stripped to facilitate the repair of corrosion and dents, changig some sheet metal and apply some special anticorrosion materials. We were able to fall back onto a big team consisting of Do specialists, professional mechanics, inspectors to share the common knowledge and gain new insights. Our youngster who were part of the team probably have learned the most. Once the fuselage was ready, we started with the wings, flight control surfaces and flaps. We documented every step of the way taking pictures to ease the reassemly. A big step forward was the painting of the metall parts when we saw the cgosen color combination of olive green and light blue fir the first time, after all it is only known from pictures.

After that the complete flight controls were gone through including recovering all flight control surfaces according to the manufacturers standards and sewing the fabric with the required 2mm gaps.

Do27

Do27

Probably the most demanding task. Our project went so far that the constant search for parts and instrumentation posted a real challenge. The porop needed to be overhauled by Mühlbauer MT, the engine was completely disassembled, overhauled as necessary and reassembled. All hoses needed to be renewed. One of the milestones was withour any doubt the joining og the wing and the fuselage for the first time after 2005.

Do27

Do27

Alot of work accomplished, hardly anything to see. We were able to reproduce graphics of the original decals and stickers. With these original templates we finally did paint all the details as well.

Do27

Do27

Quite a moment when after many years and countless hours of applying correct markings an airplane finally gets its old registration back. Looking like a toothless tiger, the installation of engine and propeller made it look like a real airplane again!

Dornier Do27

Step by step we were able to complete the electrical system and looked forward to any new light bulb or system coming back to life. Fevruary 2018 saw the first run of the overhauled Lycoming GO480B1A6 engine. What a feeling, years after putting it to sleep in 2005 without any real idea what the future might hold for the Do.

Do27

Rigging the flightcontrols, completing the new instrument panel, labeling the new panels and accessories and having the seats reupholstered were our next steps.

Do27

Owed to the many connections and access to soecial knowledge and experience the restoration was not only hard work, it was straight forward and a lot of rewarding fun.

The D-EMEJ will be renamed D-EQXG with her new registration, continuing the QUAX series of tailnumbers.
